Detailed Solution

Concept-Age of Gowri is 30 years  and the age of Ganesh is 10 years.
First, let's assume that Ganesh and Gowri are currently x and y years old, respectively. Then, based on the conditions given for ages five years ago, build one equation, and from the conditions given for ages now, form another. To find the solution, solve it concurrently.
The question compares the ages of Gowri and Ganesh in two scenarios: five years ago, Gowri was five times Ganesh's age; and five years from now, Gowri will be twenty years older than Ganesh.
Let's say that Ganesh and Gowri are currently x and y years old, respectively. Take the first instance from five years ago for example.
So, five years ago the ages of Ganesh and Gowri were (x−5),(y−5)(x−5),(y−5) respectively.
At that time, the age of Gowri was five times as old as Ganesh. So, we can write according to the question as,
(y−5)=5(x−5)
So, on simplification we get
y−5=5x−25
Now adding 5 to both sides, we get
y=5x−20…....................................(i)
So, now let's see the 2nd case in five years.
So, five years later the age of Ganesh and Gowri will be (x+5) and (y+5). We can write according to the question,
y+5=(x+5)+20
On simplification, we get
y+5=x+25
Now subtracting 5 from both sides, we get
y=x+20………………………….(ii)
Now from both the cases, we get two versions of y in terms of ‘x’. So, now we will equate it.
5x−20=x+20
Now, taking all the variable terms on one side and constant on the other side. So, we get
4x=40
Hence, the value of x is 10.
Now, for finding y we will substitute the value of x in equation(i). We will get
y=5×10−20=30
Thus, the value of y is 30.
Hence, the answer is 30, 10
