Detailed Solution

The attraction of two or more distinct molecules is what causes adhesive forces.  However, cohesive force occurs due to the attraction between the molecules of the same substance.

The force of attraction between molecules and walls of the vessel is what generates adhesive force. So, when adhesion is more, the molecules are attracted to the walls more than the nieghbouring molecules. The liquid will rise due to the attraction and a meniscus of upward concave shape is formed for the same reason.
