People living with haemophilia require periodic transfusions of clotting factors in order to maintain a normal blood clotting system. Prior to 1992, there was no screening available to ensure that donated blood products were HIV-free. Hence, haemophilic patients receiving untested and unscreened clotting factor were considered to be at extreme risk for contracting HIV. Today, there are extensive screening tools in place that reduce the risk of HIV infection.
