For a real object, a convex lens can produce both real and virtual images, but a concave lens can only produce a virtual image.
This argument depends upon the distance of the object from the lens. If an object is placed beyond the focus, then the image formed in the case of a convex lens is also virtual. But a concave lens always produces a virtual image irrespective of the position of the object.
