As the power of a lens is defined as the reciprocal of the focal length, it is denoted as
 P = 1f (Where f is the focal length of the given lens)
Convex lenses converge and have positive power because their focal lengths are positive. Concave lenses diverge and have a negative power because their focal length is negative.
