Detailed Solution

For every mile of railroad track, 1,760 to 2,000 sleepers were required by the British as a new need emerged in the 1850s as railways grew. Railroads were essential for colonial trade and the mobility of imperial forces. Locomotives needed wood as fuel, and railway rails were built using sleepers. In the 1860s, the railway network began to expand quite quickly. By 1890, some 25,500 km of track had been constructed. By 1946, the length of the rails had increased to more than 765,000 km.
