.
As we know, the speed of sound in air is

340 m / s

and the sensitivity of human ears to hear the echo is

0.1 seconds

. Then, the distance travelled by sound in

0.1 \sec

would be

340 \times 0.1 = 34 m

. Hence, the total distance covered by the sound from the source to the obstacle and also back from the obstacle to the source should be at least equal to

34 m

. Thus, for hearing echo, the minimum distance between the reflecting surface and the source of sound must be equal to half of that distance which is equal to
