Detailed Solution

For hearing echo, the minimum distance between the source of sound and the obstacle should be at least 17 m.
As we know, the speed of sound in air is 340 m/s and the sensitivity of human ears to hear the echo is 0.1 seconds. Then, the distance travelled by sound in 0.1 sec would be 340×0.1=34 m. Hence, the total distance covered by the sound from the source to the obstacle and also back from the obstacle to the source should be at least equal to 34 m. Thus, for hearing echo, the minimum distance between the reflecting surface and the source of sound must be equal to half of that distance which is equal to 17 m.
