Detailed Solution

For plant workers in Assam, freedom meant the right to move freely in and out in the areas confined by the Inland Emigration Act of 1885. Workers' opinions of Mahatma Gandhi and the idea of swaraj vary greatly. For Assamese plantation workers, freedom meant having the ability to enter and exit the cramped space where they were held without restriction and maintaining contact with their home society. Plantation workers were forbidden from emigrating inland after the Inland Emigration Act of 1859. As soon as they learned about the Non-Cooperation Movement, thousands of workers rebelled against the government, left the plantations, and went back home. They all understood the word "swaraj" differently, each believing it to signify the cessation of all pain and suffering.
