For sound reflex actions, we require intact spinal cord. The spinal cord is the most important structure between the body and the brain. It extends from the foramen magnum where it is continuous with the medulla to the level of the first or second lumbar vertebrae. It functions primarily in the transmission of neural signals between the brain and the rest of the body but also contains neural circuits that can independently control numerous reflexes and central pattern generators.
