For the purpose of holding elections, India is broken up into a number of distinct geographic regions referred to as Electoral constituencies. One representative is chosen by the people who live in a particular area.
1)      To hold elections for the Lok Sabha, India is divided into 543 seats. Members of Parliament, more often referred to as MPs, are elected to represent their respective constituencies in Parliament.
2)      Each state has a predetermined number of congressional and assembly districts. Here, the person chosen to represent their constituent is referred to as a Member of Legislative Assembly, or MLA for short. Within each parliamentary constituency are multiple assembly seats that make up that area.
3)      Elections for the Panchayat and the Municipality both follow the same basic pattern. Each municipality, whether a hamlet or a town, is subdivided into many "wards," which function similarly to constituencies. Each ward chooses one person to represent the village or the urban local body. There are instances in which these electoral districts are considered "seats," given that each electoral district is equivalent to one seat in the assembly.
