For the tribals, market and commerce often meant debt and poverty. To obtain the goods that were not produced in the area, tribal groups frequently had to buy and sell during the colonial rule in India. They became dependent on traders and moneylenders as a result. Traders moved around the area, offering their wares for sale and charging high prices for them. In addition, moneylenders provided the tribal people with loans to help them with their cash needs. However, the interest rates on the loans were extremely high. Market and commerce thus frequently represented debt and poverty for the tribal people. As a result, they started blaming the moneylenders and traders for their problems and came to view them as evil outsiders.
