The Union List includes those subjects which hold national importance. Only the Union government has the power to make laws on the subjects included in the Union List. There are a few essential subjects on which a uniform policy is needed throughout the country. Thus, these subjects are included in the Union List. Foreign affairs are one such subject. Other subjects of the Union list are the defence of the nation, communications, banking, currency, etc. The Constitution of India lays down the distribution of legislative powers between the two levels of government in three lists, the Union List, State List, and Concurrent List.
