Water seeps into the soil naturally. When too much water is present which cannot be absorbed by the soil, or when the rate of water absorption is slower than the rate of incoming water, or when the soil is saturated with water, the excess water forms a layer on top of the soil, this may be stagnant or may overflow leading to floods. Flood is a natural calamity caused due to overflow of large amount of water. Forests have many trees whose roots bind to the soil to prevent the soil from being washed away with heavy rains and also facilitates in the absorption of rainwater, thus, preventing floods.
