Detailed Solution

Forest diversity disappeared due to the clearing of forests for Industrialization in the 19th century. About one-sixth of India's landmass was under agriculture in 1600. This number has now increased to around 50%. Over the years, as populations grew and a greater need for food, peasants expanded the area under agriculture by thinning forests and clearing additional land. For several reasons, agriculture multiplied throughout the colonial era. First, the British actively promoted the cultivation of industrial crops, including cotton, sugar, wheat, and jute. Food grains were needed to sustain the expanding urban population, and raw materials were required for industrial manufacturing, which led to a rise in demand for these crops in nineteenth-century Europe. Second, the colonial authorities believed wood was unproductive in the nineteenth century.
