Detailed Solution

Four ashramas were Brahmacharya, grihastha, vanaprastha, and sannyasa.
Brahmins created the ashrama system when Jainism and Buddhism gained popularity. In this context, the term "ashrama" refers to a stage of life. The Brahmacharya, grihastha, vanaprastha, and sannyasa ashramas were recognised. Men of the Brahmin, Kshatriya, and Vaishya castes were supposed to live humble lives and devote their formative years to studying the Vedas (Brahmacharya). They then had to get married and become homeowners (grihastha). They then had to live in the woods and practise meditation (vanaprastha). Finally, they had to renounce everything and be sannyasins. Men were allowed to meditate for a period of their lives under the ashrama system. Women were required to follow the ashramas determined by their husbands and were not permitted to read the Vedas.
