$\frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u} = \frac{1}{f} \Rightarrow \frac{1}{u^{2}} + \frac{1}{v^{2}} - \frac{2}{u v} = \frac{1}{f^{2}}$

$\frac{d f}{f^{2}} = d u (\frac{1}{f^{2}} + \frac{2}{u v}) = d u (\frac{1}{f^{2}} + \frac{2}{u} (\frac{1}{f} + \frac{1}{u}))$

$d f = d u (1 + \frac{2 f}{u} + \frac{2 f^{2}}{u^{2}}) \Rightarrow d f$ is minimum when $0 = - \frac{2 f}{u^{2}} - \frac{4 f^{2}}{u^{3}}$
