Detailed Solution

France supported the thirteen colonies of America in their war of independence. France assisted the thirteen American colonies under Louis XVI in gaining freedom from their mutual enemy, Britain. This was primarily due to France's intense desire for vengeance following its defeat in the Seven Years' War. Additionally, it aimed to weaken Britain strategically. After the Declaration of Independence, the general public and the French nobility supported the American Revolution. A debt already reached more than 2 billion livres was increased further because of the war by at least a billion. The state was compelled to raise taxes to cover its ongoing costs, including those associated with running its institutions, courts, government offices, and armies.
