Detailed Solution

Friedrich William IV was a Prussian King. He was Frederick William III's oldest son. The Revolution of 1848 was fueled in part by his conservative views. After a stroke rendered him unable to govern in 1857, his brother, the future William I, was appointed regent. Frederick William declined the crown of a unified Germany that the Frankfurt Parliament offered him in 1849 because an elected body could not grant a king by divine right power. He destroyed the constitution drafted by that assembly. He was a true conservative who would only accept the crown from royalty.
