The process of printing books in China began around the year 594 AD and involved rubbing paper, which was also invented in China, against the inked surface of woodblocks. Since it was not possible to print on both sides of the thin, porous sheet, the traditional Chinese "accordion book" was created by folding the sheet in half and stitching it along the side.
