From the 16th century, European trading companies started buying Indian textiles for sale in Europe. India had been the world's largest exporter of cotton textiles before the British took it over and made India its colony. Before this, India exported to the west and central Asia and the islands of Java and Sumatra in Southeast Asia. Its textiles were famous for their fine quality and excellent designs and craftsmanship. Moreover, its cotton textiles were famous in Europe by the name Calicoes. These clothes were bought by European trading companies in India and sold in Europe.
