The fourth stage ashram is Sanyaas. The sannyasis stand out in saffron clothing. They are sometimes referred to as sadhus (holy people), albeit not all of them are today. They had to leave their family and house and were not allowed to visit their wife. Sanyasis were free to wander, living a life solely dependent on God. They were regarded as legally dead. It was important to control the mind and senses throughout this period of life to focus the mind on the Supreme. They must become brave and detached, totally reliant on God as the only shield.
