Let the diagram of the situation be,
seoLet the angle of elevation and angle of depression be θ  , and the horizontal distance of the tower from the cliff be x  . So,
CAE=EAD=θ BD=AE=x  
We know that the alternate interior angles are equal. So,
EAD=ADB=θ  
In the triangle ABD, we have
tanθ= AB DB  
tanθ= 20 x  … (1)
Similarly, in the triangle AED, we have
tanθ= DE AE  
tanθ= 20 AE  … (2)
Comparing the equation (1) and (2), we get
20 AE = 20 x 20AE=20x AE=x  
In triangle AEC, we have
tanθ= CE EA  
tanθ= CE x  … (3)
Comparing the equation (1) and (3), and we have
CE x = 20 x CE=20  
Now, the length of CD is given by,
CD=CE+ED =20+20 =40  
Therefore, the height of the tower is 40 m.
Hence, the correct option is 2.
