The first expression of nationalism was introduced by the French Revolution in 1789 in Europe. In 1789, France was under the control of monarchical rule. At the beginning of the French Revolution, the people introduced various measures to create a sense of unity among them. They introduced the ideas of la Patrie and le Citoyen, emphasising the idea of collectivism. After the French Revolution, there were political and constitutional changes. These changes led to the transfer of sovereignty from the monarchical rulers to the body of French citizens. The French Revolution declared the people supreme, and the people would decide and constitute the nation in the future. During this time, the idea of nationalism spread from France to other parts of Europe.
