In 1857, the revolt broke out in Meerut. The main reason for the revolt was the new cartridge in the arms. It was believed that cartridges used for these new rifles were greased with the fat of cows and pigs. In Meerut, the 3rd Native Cavalry refused to accept the greased cartridges, which sparked the general mutiny against the British. Later, it spread to other places of India like Delhi, Lucknow etc.
