Detailed Solution

The revolt of 1857 began in Meerut. Mangal Pandey was executed on April 8, 1857, for assaulting his officers in Barrackpore. A few days later, some sepoys from the regiment at Meerut objected to using the new cartridges in the army drill since they were thought to be covered in pig and cow fat. The other Indian soldiers at Meerut responded in a most unusual way. The army marched to the Meerut jail on May 10 and freed the sepoys who were being held there. British officers were attacked and killed by them. They took British weapons and ammunition, destroyed British structures and property, and launched a war on the British. The sepoys from Meerut rode all through the night of May 10 in order to arrive in Delhi the next morning. The troops stationed in Delhi also revolted as word of their arrival spread.
