Silk was mostly exported from China during ancient times. Around 7000 years ago, China discovered silk, but they kept it a secret. Silk clothes were sent to different places as a gift for rich merchants. Silk was very expensive during the time because it had to be imported through China. Chinese rulers gifted silk to the rulers in Iran and West Asia. The route through which they transported silk came to be known as the Silk Route. As a result, the knowledge about silk was spread to other parts of the country. Wearing silk became the fashion amongst rulers and rich people in Rome.
