India extends from 6° 44’ N to 35° 30’ N latitudes and from 68° 7’ E to 97° 25’ E longitudes. From about 22° N latitude, the shape of India begins to change. It begins to taper and finally forms the southernmost point at Indira Point in Kanyakumari. This is the region where the peninsular plateau is located, with its base pointing to the south. The tapering end of the Indian subcontinent extends into the Indian ocean to divide it into the Arabian Sea in the west and the Bay of Bengal to the east. The peninsula, surrounded by oceans on three sides, is ideal for establishing trade relations with the neighboring countries. It also helps in establishing sea routes with the Gulf countries for ease of transportation of goods.
