Detailed Solution

Dutch and English trading ships began using the ports of Surat from the early seventeenth century.
Surat was one of the most significant ports for trade in the Indian Ocean, located in Gujarat on the west coast of India. From the early seventeenth century, commerce ships from the Netherlands and England started using the port. The eighteenth century saw a fall in its significance. European trading companies imported silver in order to buy cotton and silk fabrics from India through the port of Surat. Prior to the British conquest of Bengal in the early 1750s, India was the world's top producer of cotton textiles.
