Jamdani originated from Lucknow in the United Provinces and Dacca in Bengal. These cities were the two most important hubs for Jamdani weaving. The lovely muslin fabric known as "jamdani" has been produced for ages along the banks of the Shitalakhwa River in Bangladesh's South Rupshi of Narayanganj district. The Mughal emperors promoted the production of traditional jamdani with imperial warrants. However, the British colonial era saw a dramatic decline in the jamdani and muslin industries in Bengal due to colonial import laws favouring factory-made textiles. In more recent years, jamdani production has increased in Bangladesh. Typically, jamdani is woven using cotton and gold thread.
