Detailed Solution

Concept: Without this gland, the body would find it difficult to sleep and wake at the same time, may not be able to react to changes in light levels appropriately, and may not be able to control the puberty phase.
A tiny endocrine gland, the pineal gland. In an adult, it weighs about 0.1 gram and measures 5 to 9 mm in length. But prior to puberty, it is bigger.
Endocrine glands include the pineal body. Near the center of the brain, in the epithalamus, it can be found. One hormone, melatonin, is known to be secreted by it. Melatonin governs the function of gonads like the testicles and ovaries as well as brightens the skin tone of some particular animals. The pineal gland is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light.
