According to observing the motion of objects on inclined planes, Galileo presents that objects move with constant speed when no force works on them.

In his first experiment, Galileo researched the motion of marbles on an inclined plane. He analyzed that when a marble rolls down an inclined plane, its velocity will increase, as shown in Figure (a).

Here the marble will fall under the unbalanced force of gravity. The velocity of the marble will decrease when it rolls up the inclined plane (against the force of gravity), as shown in Figure (b). From these researches, Galileo argued that the velocity of a marble rolling on a flat horizontal surface should remain constant.
