Detailed Solution

Gandhi called for the Nom-Cooperation movement in 1920. The non-cooperation movement was an unsuccessful attempt in 1920-22, organised by Mahatma Gandhi, to persuade the British government of India to give control, or swaraj, to India. It was one of Gandhi's first planned acts of massive public disobedience (satyagraha). The movement came amid political turmoil that rocked the continent. The strong influence of the British raj, as shown in its passage on Rowlatt Acts (1919) despite the fierce opposition of the Indians, led to a significant setback. British-led violence in Punjab — especially the massacre in Amritsar in April 1919, where hundreds of Indians were assassinated — increasingly determined that Indian independence was needed.
