Detailed Solution

Gandhiji, in 1919, decided to launch a nationwide satyagraha against the proposed Rowlatt Act.
Gandhiji decided this after this success gave him confidence (1919). Despite the Indian members of the Imperial Legislative Council uniting in opposition, the body had hastily approved this Act. It granted the government the authority to suppress political activity and permitted the two-year detention of political prisoners without charge. Mahatma Gandhi called for nonviolent civil disobedience beginning on April 6 with a hartal opposing such unjust laws. Numerous cities organised rallies, railroad workshop workers went on strike, and businesses shuttered. The British government decided to suppress the nationalists in response to the popular uprising. They feared the revolt might disrupt transportation and communication networks like the trains and telegraph.
