Gandhiji launched the cotton mill workers’ Satyagraha at Ahmedabad.
There were numerous textile mills in Ahmedabad. Prices had increased, and the mill workers wanted better pay. The mill owners were adamantly opposed. Gandhi took up the cause of the workers out of sympathy. He started a fight and used nonviolent resistance. Gandhi was proudly followed by the workers, who gave him their unwavering support. They declared they would not return to work until a settlement had been made as they marched through the streets holding enormous banners. Days passed by, but the proprietors of the mill were insistent. Due to the impending famine, the strikers were growing impatient. Their self-control deteriorated. Gandhi was concerned that some employees would violate their promise and return to work. That would be a terrible moral failure.
