Gandhiji launched nationwide Satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act.
The British government introduced the Rowlatt Act, also known as the black act, or the Government of India Act 1919. However, Gandhi launched Satyagraha as this act gave enormous powers to the colonial government. They could repress political activities in the country and detain suspects without trial for two years. Consequently, many political revolutionaries and ordinary people who participated in the freedom struggle were arrested based on suspicion and detained without trial. Therefore against this Rowlatt Act, Gandhiji decided to start a nationwide Satyagraha. He wanted non-violent civil obedience against such unfair law and started the movement with a hartal on April 6. Thus the protesters organised rallies, strikes and boycotts of shops and foreign goods.
