On 9th January 1915, Gandhi reached the city sailing from South Africa. Gandhi left India for South Africa in April 1893 when he was twenty-three. He had accepted a piece contract that he thought would last for about a year. A businessperson asked him in Kathiawar to accept the legal work for his first cousin in the urban centre. Gandhi completed living in South Africa for twenty-one years. South Africa was conjointly an area of the British Empire then. Though a professional, Gandhi had sweet-faced racism in South Africa. He helped establish the Natal Indian Congress in 1894.
