Gandhiji withdrew from the Non-cooperation movement in 1922.
Mahatma Gandhi decided to withdraw from the Non-cooperation movement on February 12, 1922, because on February 5, the Chauri-Chaura incident occurred in the Gorakhpur district of the present Uttar Pradesh state. The people who participated in the Non-cooperation movement often became violent when they clashed with the British. Hence in Gorakhpur, the peaceful demonstration became aggressive and burnt the police station situated at Chauri-Chaura, and 22 police officers died from the burning. Gandhiji was shocked by this incident, so he withdrew from the Non-cooperation movement.
