Detailed Solution

Garibaldi led an army of volunteers to Rome to attack the Papal states. Giuseppe Garibaldi led a volunteer army to Rome in 1867 to take on the Papal States, which housed a French garrison and represented the final barrier to the union of Italy. The combined French and Papal forces proved to be more than a match for the Red Shirts, Garibaldi's volunteer army. The Papal States were not incorporated into Italy until 1870, when France withdrew its troops from Rome following the war with Prussia.
