Guiseppe Garibaldi led the famous Expedition of the Thousand to South Italy in 1860. Garibaldi had gained a reputation as an effective military commander by 1860. Garibaldi's 1860 campaign, known as the Expedition of the Thousand, toppled the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Naples) and made it possible for Sicily and southern Italy to be united with the north of Italy. The expedition served as the model for modern rebellion and popular war and was one of the most dramatic incidents of the Risorgimento (campaign for Italian unity).
