Copper is less reactive than hydrogen and does not displace it from acids like HCl or H2SO4.
However, it reacts with dilute HNO3 because HNO3 is a strong oxidizing agent. The reaction produces nitric oxide (NO) as the gas.
3Cu + 8HNO3 → 3Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO + 4H2O
