General Parvez Musharraf was the President of Pakistan. A bloodless military takeover was carried out in 1999 under General Parvez Musharraf's direction. He toppled Nawaz Sharif's democratically elected administration and proclaimed himself the nation's "Chief Executive". He later changed his designation to the President of the country. He even held a referendum in 2002 that granted him a five-year extension as the President. The referendum, he claimed, had expressed the popular will of the citizens of the country despite the fact that the Constitution of Pakistan has no provisions regarding the election of a President by means of a referendum.
