Genetically engineered insulin for human use is produced using the bacterium Escherichia coli. E. coli is a commonly used host organism in biotechnology and genetic engineering processes due to its rapid growth rate and ability to express foreign genes.
In the year 1983, the American company Eli Lilly undertook the creation of two distinct DNA sequences that correspond to A and B chains found within human insulin. These sequences were then incorporated into the plasmids of E. coli. Chains A and B that were produced separately were combined through the creation of disulphide bonds to form human insulin. This genetically engineered insulin is used to treat individuals with diabetes.
