Alloys are prepared to improve the properties of metals. Some alloys and their compositions are-

Alloy

Composition

Brass

Cu + Zn

Bronze

Cu +Sn

Stainless steel

Fe +Cr + Ni + C

Solder

Pb + Sn

German silver

Cu + Zn + Ni

Thus, German silver contains copper, zinc, and nickel with the composition of 25-30%, 25-35%, and 10-15% respectively. German silver is widely used for its hardness, toughness and resistance to corrosion for items such as tableware (commonly silver-plated), marine fittings and plumbing fittings. Due to its high electrical resistance, it is also used in heating coils.
