Detailed Solution

Germany, Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Turkey formed the Triple Alliance in Europe during the First World War. The immediate cause of the war was the murder of Archduke Ferdinand, who was the heir to the Austrian throne. The Alliance originally included Italy, but Italy remained neutral in 1914 when the First World War started. The opposition group was called the Allied Powers or the Triple Entente. Major participants of the Entente were the United Kingdom, Russia and France.
