Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882) was a very well-known freedom fighter. He somehow managed to get a lot of volunteers apart from the regular troops. He and his troops marched into South Italy and the kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and they successfully warned the local peasants to drive out the Spanish rulers. His heroic activities and movements, featured in the major British newspapers, helped him earn admiration in England in the 1860s. Giuseppe Garibaldi supported the efforts that Victor Emmanuel II put into the unification of Italy. Victor Emmanuel II succeeded in his plan, and due to his constant efforts, he finally became the king of united Italy in 1861.
