Detailed Solution

Multiple fission is a common reproductive strategy in several single-celled organisms, particularly protozoans and algae.

  • Plasmodium (Malarial Parasite): This is a classic example.Plasmodium undergoes multiple fission (called schizogony) inside the liver cells and red blood cells of its human host. This process allows it to rapidly multiply and cause the symptoms of malaria.
  • Amoeba: While Amoeba primarily reproduces by binary fission, it switches to multiple fission (often called sporulation) when it encounters unfavorable conditions like the drying up of a pond. It forms a cyst and produces many tiny amoebulae inside.
  • Chlamydomonas: This single-celled green alga can also reproduce asexually through multiple fission, where the parent cell divides to form several zoospores within its cell wall.
