Village residents were uprooted without warning or compensation. Land rents had been rising, which was bad for the villagers.
The people of Bastar were concerned when the Colonial Government proposed in 1905 to reserve two-thirds of the forest and prohibit shifting cultivation, hunting, and harvesting of forest produce. Some people were allowed to remain in the Reserved Forests if they agreed to labour for the Forest Department for free, chopping down and transporting trees and preventing forest fires. People from other villages were forcibly relocated without warning or compensation. For a long time, villagers had been suffering from rising land rents and Colonial Officials' frequent demands for free labour and supplies. The villagers were obliged to revolt against the British due to all of these actions.
