Give two examples of photosynthetic bacteria

Some bacteria can make their own energy from sunlight, similar to plants. These bacteria, called photosynthetic bacteria, use special pigments like bacteriochlorophyll and carotenoids to capture light energy.

The process of photosynthesis in these bacteria happens in the cell membrane, where special structures called photosynthesis units are stacked together to increase the surface area for absorbing light.

These bacteria are very adaptable. They can adjust to changes in light by changing the type and amount of pigments, which helps them capture sunlight more efficiently.

Bacteria that make their own food using sunlight are called photoautotrophs. Some bacteria are called chemoautotrophs, which get energy from chemical reactions, and some are photoheterotrophs, which use light for energy but cannot make food from carbon dioxide.

Examples of photosynthetic bacteria include purple bacteria, green non-sulfur bacteria, green sulfur bacteria, and cyanobacteria.
