To over come species specific barrier in artificial hybridisation, plant breeders perform fusion of protoplasts of different species with desirable characters to create a somatic hybrid. 

A whole plant is generated from this hybrid cell. 

A plant cell without a cellwall is Protoplast. It is generated by tretment with Cellulases and Pectinases.

Protoplasts of different cells of the same plant can be fused but do not obtain hybrid protoplast.

The hybrid protoplast contains characters of both  the parents.
