As reabsorption of water in the initial segments of the nephron is termed passive since it does not require the expenditure of ATP (energy). It is called obligatory reabsorption since it is not dependent on ADH. Reabsorption in the distal segment of the nephron that is dependent on ADH is termed facultative reabsorption.
